Duplicator “Freeze on Step 2: Database Install” Workaround

A student has reported an issue with the Duplicator part of the Moving a WordPress Site exercise: the process freezes in Step 2: Install the Database.

Things like this can happen since there are lots of moving parts involved in hosting a website, so software updates can inadvertently introduce issues.

There are, however, at least two easily implemented workarounds.

OPTION 1: Create the Database before Using Duplicator
One of my videos showing how to use Duplicator shows how to create the database in Duplicator rather than phpMyAdmin.

When using this option, however, the freezing described above occurs.

If you instead create the database the way we have done in class (from MAMP, click “Web Start Page”, go Tools > phpMyAdmin, Create Database), this process will work.

Just make sure that you choose Empty Database, not Create New Database, as part of the initial Duplicator process.
