Responsive Web Design Guided Self-Study

This exercise is optional.

However, if you complete it, you will learn a great deal about one of the cornerstones of modern front-end web design.

Loaded on all of the Publishing Departments iPads are a number of eBooks from abookapart, which is the print wing of alistapart.com, long easily one of the most important sites in the web design industry. The books are all very good—well-written, concise tomes from leaders of the industry.

(If you’re not in one of my Publishing classes, you can get the book at indigo, amazon, etc, or as a direct download from abookapart.com.)

In particular, read the book Responsive Web Design, by Ethan Marcotte. This is an great extension of his influential Fluid Grids article from alistapart.com. It really was a revolutionary document when it came out a few years ago.

Marcotte set up site to demonstrate the examples in his book: robot or not?

Use the application Site Sucker (it’s in the Langara A247 lab) to download all the files from the site.

Then go through the book and build it as you go—using the images you downloaded with Site Sucker.

You will not regret the time you spend.
